The Sunday June 26th session of Circus History Live! featured a fascinating conversation about documenting circus history through photography. Our guests were noted circus photographers Paul Gutheil, Kirk Marsh, and Jerry Cash! They showed us many of their iconic photos and tell us the stories behind those photos.

Paul Gutheil has been photographing circus performers, owners, and staffers in the New York City area for decades. His photos capture both the action in the ring and circus life behind the scenes.

Kirk Marsh is an environmental portrait photographer and digital artist. A 1997 graduate of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Kirk toured with the Greatest Show on Earth and also with his solo silent comedy show. His circus photos capture the magic of the circus.

Jerry Cash developed an interest in the circus as a kid. He started taking pictures in 1959, at the age of 14, with a simple Brownie camera. It started as a way to remember the shows and then evolved into the concept of  trying to tell a story with his pictures.

This program was hosted by Circus Historical Society vice president and circus historian: Chris Berry.

All Circus History Live! sessions are free. They are open to both members and non-members. Registration is required.

Non-members are invited to Join the CHS. For only $60 per year, you will receive four issues of the Bandwagon journal and have access to our online Bookstorewhere you can purchase used circus books, programs, CDs and DVDs!
